Interviews & Giveaways: Firelight by Kristen Callihan

I recently had the good fortune to read an ARC of Firelight. I was so completely mesmerized with this SIZZLING book that I decided I must write this author and gush like a little school girl about how much I adored her characters and world building. I decided why not make it an interview so I can share with all of you this truly talented debut author.

Please help me welcome Kristen Callihan to the blog. Also please don’t hesitate to comment and ask her questions because she so graciously offered to stop by and chime in!! :)

London, 1881
Once the flames are ignited . . .
Miranda Ellis is a woman tormented. Plagued since birth by a strange and powerful gift, she has spent her entire life struggling to control her exceptional abilities. Yet one innocent but irreversible mistake has left her family’s fortune decimated and forced her to wed London’s most nefarious nobleman.

They will burn for eternity . . . Lord Benjamin Archer is no ordinary man. Doomed to hide his disfigured face behind masks, Archer knows it’s selfish to take Miranda as his bride. Yet he can’t help being drawn to the flame-haired beauty whose touch sparks a passion he hasn’t felt in a lifetime. When Archer is accused of a series of gruesome murders, he gives in to the beastly nature he has fought so hard to hide from the world. But the curse that haunts him cannot be denied. Now, to save his soul, Miranda will enter a world of dark magic and darker intrigue. For only she can see the man hiding behind the mask.

My Review: http://missvainsparanormalfantasy.com/?p=609

1. How long did it take you to write Firelight?

The first draft took me about 4 months. It came in at about 160k words, or 585 pages. My editor had me carve it down to about 97k words, which took a LOT longer. Part of the problem was that neither my editor nor I could point to any one scene that screamed out for the ax. It was more a matter of finessing, shaving, and combining things.

2. Did anything in particular inspire you to write Firelight?

I have to admit that I was staring at my computer screen, trying to think of my next story, while my daughter was watching Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Suddenly, I began to wonder, what if the beast wasn’t turned into an animal, but a man cursed to lose his soul? What if the beauty wasn’t a helpless victim, but his only salvation? That’s all it took.

3. If I asked your best friend, who would she reveal as your celebrity crush?

My best friend is my little sister. I called her to ask. :) She claims it’s Jude Law. This might be due to the fact that The Holiday came on recently, and I might have called her to well literally -drool- about how gorgeous Jude Law looked -and sounded. Cough. But I deny all allegations. I do not have crushes.

4. How much time daily, do you devote to your reading/writing?

I’m not very regimented. Which is a bit of a problem. Sometimes, it’s an hour. Sometimes my butt is in the chair from 9 to 10pm. Sometimes, I turn off the computer and the story reels around in my head until morning.

5. If you were asked out on a fantasy date (Shhhhhh, I won’t tell your husband) with a FICTIONAL male character from a book who would it be?

Oh, good one. Hmm… I don’t know. I feel like I’d be betraying the heroines of my favorite stories by taking their men out on a date. But as for a fictional character, I’d totally go out with Han Solo, pre Leia. :) I mean, he has the Millennium Falcon! We could go light speed! Maybe he’d let me shoot one of the blaster guns at asteroids, and flash that cocky grin at me when I hit one. *satisfied nerd sigh*

6. Suddenly you have discovered yourself on the cover of a national newspaper *gasp*, the headline would read “KRISTEN CALLIHAN…….” please fill in the blanks.

….Buzzes the capitol with the Millennium Falcon. Newt Gingrich spills coffee all over himself. Thousands cheer! National Holiday ensues.”

7. A fellow Firelight fan of yours as well as a good friend of mine Cat Russell (GR) asked me to ask you the following question; If you were turned into a Zombie, who would be the first person you bit?

Ha! Nice question, Cat! We’re talking the brain eating, mindless sort of Zombie, yes? In that case, I’d be hungry. As I work out of my house, I’d probably go out and bite one of my poor, unsuspecting neighbors, then wait for my husband. He’d be nice to bite. ;)

8. Has a particular book you’ve read influenced your life? If so please share the book.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon influenced me a lot because before I read it, I had this notion that stories needed to fit into one, specific genre. Then there comes this crazy, mixed up, genre-confused story, and I thought, well, hell, I’d like to try doing that. I started writing fiction about one month later.

9. Besides your writing career, do you have a day job as well?

I’m a stay at home mom. I didn’t plan to be, but once I had my first child, I decided to stay home with her, as A. I was crap at a 9 to 5 jobs, and B. I was lucky enough that we could afford to do that.

10. If you could suddenly become a paranormal creature, which would you chose to become, and why?

Decisions, decisions….I would probably become an X-man. A mutant like Storm  or Jean Gray would be cool.

11. I found Lord Archer to be incredibly mesmerizing. To be quite honest he put the capital “S” in sex appeal regardless of his disfigurement. Is there a particular person in your life that you molded his character after? {beware; If you say your husband, jealousy may occur.}  ;)

LOL. I try not to use any real inspiration for my characters. It would be too hard to do horrific things to them if I thought of someone I actually knew. There are bites of my husband in Archer, though. Mainly kindness. My husband is kind to me. Therefore, I find it extremely hard to form a hero who doesn’t have a basic kernel of kindness at his core.

However, and you aren’t going to like this, so fair warning, but Archer, and every other character I write, is mostly based on what is inside of me. In fact Archer is more like me than any other character, most especially in the way he reacts to a situation. This *might* take a bit of sexiness away…..Sorry!

12. Do you share any similarities with Miranda?

Miranda’s extreme loyalty and protectiveness of those she loves is much like mine. But her fearlessness in any situation, and her levelheadedness, are her own.

13. Suppose you were given the opportunity to morph into someone else’s life for a day, who would you chose? (Dead, Alive, Fictional, Nonfictional)

I would be a singer. I always wondered how it might feel to give a concert to thousands. All that energy feeding off what you do must be electric, and insane. So that day would have to include a performance!

Perhaps I should be Lestat. That way I could be a rock star, and a vampire who can fly. (Did I mention that I am very fond of flying?)

14. I recently read that you are a huge fan of the late John Hughes (as a child of the 80′s I am too!) movies. Please share your favorite John Hughes movie, and favorite quote.

Ack! This is hard. I love so many, but I’ll say it’s a toss up between Sixteen Candles and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

As for the quote, again too hard! But I’ll go with a romantic one, since we’re talking romance:

“You look good wearing my future.” Some kind of Wonderful.

15. I think Daisy might actually be a long lost relative of mine with her bawdy, yet charming personality. Is she based on a particular member of your family?

Daisy is fun. A particular family member? No. But her bawdiness -which is often used as a mask for her true feelings- is pretty representative of me and my sisters (I have two) when we get together. We’ve been known to make grown men blush.

16. If a famous Hollywood producer decided to make your debut novel Firelight into a movie; Which “A List” celebrities would you chose for the roles of?

Now that really is too hard! I’d probably be better at, “Not her! Not him!” lol.

Usually, I don’t see real people when I create a character. But oddly, with Firelight, there were a few characters that ended up looking quite a bit like certain people.

Archer’s friend, Lord Leland, for instance, very much reminded me of Sir Ian McKellen.

Archer (pre-curse), and this occurred to me after after a few days of writing him, looks a lot like…do you really want to know? Will it spoil it for you? Well, if you do, he looks a lot like a young Paul Newman to me.

And then there is Ian. I loathe admitting this, but in my mind, he looks and sounds very much like young Jude Law -er with dark hair. But the strange thing is that when I went to see Sherlock Holmes, I realized that Jude Law as Watson also reminded me of Winston Lane. Oh, God, I really do have a thing for Jude Law! Ignore! Ignore!

Is there anything you wish to share with your readers/fans about your debut novel Firelight?

Only that I had so much fun writing this story. There were times when I didn’t know how Miranda and Archer would find their Happily Ever After. I’m so glad they did, and I hope readers will enjoy the ride as much as I did when writing it!

VERY nice interview, Vain! I loved that her fictional crush is Han Solo. PERFECT! I have to say my fave John Hughes movie would be between Breakfast Club and 16 Candles. And btw, my hubs has a man crush on Jude Law, lol! He loves EVERYTHING that guy is in!

And the answer to your question – Barrons, as in JZB. Is there any other choice ;-)

    • Linda says:

Barrons is nice, I agree, but I’m more of a Northman kind of girl myself *grin*

What do you mean, is there any other choice??? Have you COMPLETELY forgotten about my husband Bones??? **shakes head in disappointment at Jamie**

      • MissVain says:

I know she’s fallen on her head! HA! Unfortunately that means you and I will have to fight Christen because Bones is my #1 too!;)

      • Jamie says:

Hey, now, girls! Bones and Terrible are also in my top 3 (hello – you know what i named my Kindle, lol) but JZB is my main man ;) . Dark, dangerous, sexy and mysterious..Rawr!!

Puh-leeze! My husband would roll his eyes and tell you about what a dork I am and how I shouldn’t read fiction, lol! And the hubs is hot in his own right ;-)

    • MissVain says:

Thank you Jamie! Kristen was a very fun sport with the questions!;)

I thought Han Solo was a cute answer….She must be our age for that answer…lol…how much do want to bet Mariya has never heard of him?;) I’m going to twitter her right now and ask her. HA! I loved Han Solo way back when too!;)

How cute he has a man crush…I have a crush in Jude Law too…First off her comparing Archer to a young Paul Newman…I just died and gone to Heaven…he’s smokin!!!

Barrons is indescribably sexy. He’s in my top 3!!:)

      Thanks for entering Jamie!:)

      • MissVain says:

You know what I totally believe you…well you know I’m single BUT when I’m not single..it drives them mad how silly I am over these fictional Men! *Growl* ;)

  5. Gena Robertson says:

Super fun interview! Loved the questions (so much fun and different from the normal ones, THANK YOU!!), and the answers were great!!

  9. Great interview Miss Vain :) I really liked this book too so it was fun to see her answers :) I answered your question, but of course did not follow the rules. I decided to go on 3 dates instead of one, shocker isn’t it?! Friday I have a date set with Bones, Saturday with Eric Northman and then a mid-week date with Damon, then I’m calling in sick to work the next day ;) Barrons just growled at me when I asked him out so I’m not sure what day that would be in Barrons speak?

    • MissVain says:

      Thank you Becky!! :)
I know, I’m glad you liked it too. It’s so funny because most of my friends have read it..LOL.

Us Terrible Girls can never follow the rules…*gasp* 3 dates really Becky??! Have you heard of sharing?! Besides you’ll have to clear all those dates with me of course considering every one of those men belong in my Harem…see above..6 acres out in the country…especially Bones. He’s grown quite fond of me….;)

I can’t wait to read Firelight!

    • MissVain says:

      Oh Alexa!

You make me so happy *blush* to hear that!! Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed the interview..;) I enjoyed it myself. When I sent Kristen Callihan these questions to answer I was afraid she would dislike my questions but she took right to them. I loved her answers. It was so much fun!

I can’t wait to see what you think of Firelight!;)
      Please enter the giveaway!;) Goodluck!!:)

      • Alexa says:

Lol I thought we had to answer with her answer so I put Han Solo as my answer. Oh well, I’m sure my boyfriend would be amused by that since I dislike Star Wars.

        • MissVain says:

Haha!! Funny, I just noticed this comment Alexa!;) I’m sorry you misunderstood, I should have written my question more clearly!:/ Re-enter with your true answer.:) I was a Star Wars fan growing up…..especially the E-Woks. Lol

          • Alexa says:

It won’t let me enter again since my email was already entered. Hmm this is a tough choice, who to pick..

I think I’ll go with Alejandro from Perfect Chemistry if I had to pick a YA guy. Of course for Adult it would be V from BDB!

          • MissVain says:

Hey ya sorry…this was my first giveaway so when I used the Rafflecopter thingy I didn’t realize all those options would be more helpful….sorry I’ll do better next time..:)

I haven’t read Perfect Chemistry yet…but I plan to!:) I hear he’s the ultimate bad boy! Who can resist that?!

Oh Vishous and all his tattoo glory! Hes sexy…luckily I won’t fight you for him…. LOL ;)

  11. Great interview Miss Vain. The questions were quirky and interesting.Well done.I think the comparison with Paul Newman was great. He is just so hot and he is similar to my Archer.

My list had Barrons and Curran.I had to pick someone out of my never ending list.

    • MissVain says:

      Thank you Samina!!
What was expecting you to say when you said “my questions were quirky and interesting” I was expecting you to say…like you Miss Vain LOL;)

I have been surfing online more than 3 hours these days, but I never discovered any fascinating article like yours. It is beautiful value sufficient for me. In my view, if all web owners and bloggers made good content as you probably did, the net will likely be a lot more useful than ever before.

  14. Marina Adair says:

Great Interview! The questions were fun and quirky. It was refreshing not to have the same questions that most bloggers typically ask. You made it fun!

    Marina Adair
