Life for this Grim Reaper is Sizzling HOT

Title: Third Grave Dead Ahead
Author: Darynda Jones
Series: Charley Davidson #3
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Release Date: January 31, 2012

Paranormal private eye. Grim reaper extraordinaire. Whatever. Charley Davidson is back! And she’s drinking copious amounts of caffeine to stay awake because, every time she closes her eyes, she sees him: Reyes Farrow, the parthuman, part-supermodel son of Satan. Yes, she did imprison him for all eternity, but come on. How is she supposed to solve a missing persons case, deal with an ego-driven doctor, calm her curmudgeonly dad, and take on a motorcycle gang hellbent on murder when the devil’s son just won’t give up?

“Gemma Davidson,” she answered, her voice as groggy as I felt.
“Where are you?” I asked.
“Who is this?”
“Elvis.”
“What time is it?”
“Hammer time?”
“Charley.”

Third Grave Dead Ahead starts out immediately with a bang!! What I enjoy most about Darynda Jones writing is that she can easily weave a story and make it full of excitement the entire time. I keep telling myself just one more chapter and then I’ll go to sleep, unfortunately the plots wraps me around it’s finger so to speak and I can’t let go. I blame Darynda Jones for my lack of sleep while writing this review.  I simply could not put this book down!

“How was your visit with Kim?”After a long, labored sigh, I said. “She was really happy when I got there. I’m pretty sure she was suicidal when I left.” “You do have that effect on people.”

Poor Charley is dealing with the backlash from her ubber sexy son of Satan boyfriend Reyes Farrow. Seriously when I say bad boy, you can’t get much worse that the son of Satan himself. Since she has bound Reyes to his corporal body he’s angry, he’s locked up once again in prison and he’s not speaking to Charley. However one unfortunate side effect of binding Reyes to her is that the minute she falls asleep he comes to her in her dreams and does naughty things to her that usually she would find intoxicating however Reyes oozes anger toward her and quite frankly he scares the lust right out of her.

“I need ibuprofen,” I said, my voice distant and unattractive.

“You need therapy.” It was amazing how easily I could understand him, considering he had yet to unclench his teeth.

“I need ibuprofen,” I said with a frown, in case he didn’t hear me the first time. “I’m not kidding.”

“I’m not either.”

“But I wasn’t kidding first.”

What a I love about Charley Davidson is not only is she intelligent, quirky, sassy, witty, charming, she’s a problem solver!! How does she solve the problem of falling asleep only to be met in her sleep by her deviant, frightening and gorgeous boyfriend? Coffee of course! This is where Charley takes her shenanigans and self destructive behavior to an all time hilariously funny high.

“Who on planet Earth didn’t have aspirin in the house? My head ached, for heaven’s sake. I’d nodded off on the way over to Garrett’s place and veered into oncoming traffic. The honking horns and flashing lights had me believing I’d been abducted by aliens. Thank goodness a well-placed telephone pole put a stop to that nonsense. I needed stronger coffee to keep me awake. Or maybe something else entirely. Something industrial.”

This book focuses more on Reyes and Charley’s relationship more than ever and even when he’s angry and mean, I find him simply irresistible and they’re scenes are sizzling. Luckily for us readers we do get to experience more steam amongst those two than usual because Reyes decides to escape from prison and kidnap Charley before ultimately letting her go to find the man he has was wrongfully convicted of murdering so long ago. The angry scenes between Reyes and Charley feel like I’m a voyeur watching a couple during foreplay. I find it fascinating, loving every minute of it.

However this is Charley Davidson Private Investigator also born Grim Reaper I’m talking about here so her life could not be as simple as just solving the mystery behind Reyes wrongful conviction ultimately releasing him from prison, no she must also find a missing wife of a doctor as well putting her life in grave danger. This series is a must read and I can happily say that with each book released Darynda Jones blows me away with her ability to blend a fascinating story, charismatic characters, and plenty of humor flawlessly!

“An integral part of any friends lob is to immediately clear your computer history if you die.”

Cookie and Charley have such a supportive and wonderful friendship, the way those two easily banter amongst each other, they’re just superb together. Between Garrett Swopes, Gemma, Angel, Uncle Bob and many other colorful characters the Charley Davidson series wouldn’t be the same without this flavorful cast characters Darynda Jones has so brilliantly created.

“I met him when I was in high school, remember? I know how perfect he is, how dangerous. But he won’t come after you, Uncle Bob. I promise,” I said, mentally adding my name to the roster of the Big Fat Liars Club.”

This book takes Charley’s emotions on a roller coaster ride, I’m not sure I could have survived but she does it with class, honor and persistence. She’s willing to risk her life for the sake of others, and when she suffers I feel her pain right along with her. Charley handles her obstacles quite well and somehow she always ends up on top, however with this ending I can already imagine just what horrendous uphill battles poor Charley is going to have endure in the next book. Yet as unhappy I am with a turn of events at the end, I’m also excited for this because well I think it’s going to add to an already mind blowing series, and I can’t wait to see the drama unfold in Charley’s next adventure because it’s going to be epic!

If you haven’t had the luxury of reading the Charley Davidson series then I highly suggest you read them immediately. What more could you ask for; Hilarious dialogue from a sassy and oh so enjoyable heroine who is also the Grim Reaper, with a smoking hot bad boy,  convict boyfriend, a fun loving best friend, dead people, a dead gangster employee, an arrogant detective, and so much more! That’s just all in a days work in the life of Private Investigator, secretly Grim Reaper, son of Satan loving Charley Davidson.

“Quite Frankly Reyes Farrow could bite my ass”
