Review: Lover Reborn

I Was Lost Until You Saved Me

Title: Lover Reborn
Author: J. R. Ward
Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood # 10
Publisher: NAL
Release Date: March 27, 2012

In the darkest corners of the night in Caldwell, New York, a conflict like no other rages. The city is home to a band of brothers born to defend their race: the warriorvampires of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

Now back in the Brotherhood – and unrecognizable as the vampire leader he once was – Tohrment is physically emaciated and heartbroken beyond despair. When he begins to see his beloved in his dreams – trapped in a cold, isolating netherworld – Tohr turns to a self-serving fallen angel in hopes of saving the one he has lost. When he’s told he must learn to love another to free his former mate, Tohr knows they are all doomed . . .

Except then a female with a shadowed history begins to get through to him. Against the backdrop of the raging war with the lessers, and with a new clan of vampires vying for the Blind King’sthrone, Tohr struggles between the buried past, and a very hot, passion-filled future . . . but can his heart let go and set all of them free?

“My beloved was dead, he said out loud. She was…..dead..How ironic. He’d been mourning her this whole time, and yet somehow missing the point that was most obvious. She was not coming back. Ever.”

So I’m going to be honest, I entered into Lover Reborn with much trepidation. I went in prepared to be in emotional turmoil the entire time reading it because I knew Tohr moving on with a HEA was going to get ugly. I was right; It was ugly, it was messy, it was tumultuous, and it was beautiful. Luckily for me I reveled in this murky territory.

“I want to return the favor to you.”

Wow! Tohr was so much more sexy than I expected.. Tohr was broken beyond repair it seemed, and I wanted him to finally have the peace he deserved, and I saw no reason for him to be suffering without a mate forever. On that note I still found it a difficult task to replace Wellsie, and many times while reading I felt uncomfortable as if we were cheating on Welssie. I’m conflicted because I wanted Tohr to be happy but I liked Welsie better than No’One, and I kept thinking in the back of mind he was moving on too fast, he’s letting go too fast, he’s forcing it. However, the book takes place for an entire year, and he has been grieving for fifteen months prior to the beginning of Lover Reborn.

“I knew it was you,” he said softly. “The entire time…..I knew it was you.”

J.R. Ward was merciless on several occasions in this book with my delicate heart

“The truth was, she was calling something out of him, some kind of emotion, and those feelings were starting to turn gears inside of him that were rusted and cranky from lack of use. It terrified him. She Terrified him.”

No’One, can I say that I despised that silly name since she first stepped foot into the brotherhood mansion. Now that I’ve understood her story and inner self depicting turmoil I would say that name is fitting for her and thankfully she gets a new name to replace the ridiculous name she has carelessly given herself. No’One is the complete opposite of everything I enjoy about Xhex. Where Xhex is bold, strong, fearless, passionate, cunning, and ruthless, No’One is meak, mousy, fearful, and a walking example of co-dependency. I wanted No’One to be strong, assertive, what I got was a broken woman willing to be used to alleviate others sufferings only causing her pain.

this is what I wanted with No’One;
“Verily, you will have to kill me and drag my body out of here if you wish me to leave..”

This is what I got;
“He must never, ever know what beat within her heart for him. It would ruin everything.

Many times I wanted to shake her and make her stronger, and demand that she require respect from a lover, so while I didn’t dislike No’One I wanted someone less self sacrificing, and maybe a little bit more like her Sympath daughter Xhex.

“The orgasm was more powerful than anything she had ever felt. She knew earth. She knew the sanctuary. But this….was heaven”

WoW! What can I say about this voracious warrior Tohr. I had no idea just how much I would enjoy his lovemaking! Tohr was much sexier than I had imagined him to be. He was broken, and appeared almost beyond repair. His actions brought me to tears several times in this book. I’m not even sure I approved of the plot that brought him and No’One together because it seemed forced, and at the same time it seemed like it was the time to pull himself together and be a father to John, a lover to No’One, a warrior again, and LIVE. I adored Tohr and he had me in his court the entire time and then he decided to do something that made my blood boil!!! I had to shut the book, walk away, take a breather and force myself NOT to hate him.

“It was the strangest thing….Sax may have been related by blood to Qhuinn, but at the moment, he looked a lot like Blay had for years. Then again, unrequited was the same, no matter the features that reflected the emotion. Crap.”

Qhuinn & Blay, Qhuinn & Blay, Qhuinn & Blay, everyone that knows me is fully aware that I’m Team Qhuay ALL THE WAY! I missed them so much. This story warms my heart, breaks my heart, and I luxuriate in this delicious messy story. I don’t dislike Saxton at all, but him and Blay being together feels unbearable to read at times. We’re still winding down that path of Qhuinn loving Blay from afar and Blay loving Qhuinn in secrecy. I’m so emotionally wrapped up in the story, it’s feels like I’m a victim of unrequited love, but I praise that on the outstanding writing skills of Ward and her ability to make me suffer right along with these two sexy warriors.

Something happens with Qhuinn in this book that made me scream Nooooooooooooooooooo!!! How could Ward do this??? She took my heart that had already broken over Qhuinn & Blay then stabs me in the chest with her black Dagger causing me to bleed even more. It’s unforgivable, but thankfully Ward takes mercy on me, and doesn’t make me have to witness this disaster because I could barely handle knowing it occurred off screen. I’m sick over it, sickeningly sick!

Are you insane? Just because my name’s on his back, I’m suddenly a prisoner or some shit?”

Xhex and John Matthew are finding out the true meaning of the honeymoon is over. I really enjoyed being back in their story again. John Matthew is such a fierce and devoted hellren but his overprotective side leaves Xhex furious and rebelling to win back her independence. Overall these two are in love and nothing will come in between them except John Mathews need to protect Xhex, and Xhex’s need to be a warrior and prove she’s been an assassin for longer than John has been a Brother.

“No I want to bleed for you”

In case you’ve forgotten just how sexy John Mathew is, no worries there because Ward will keep reminding you in this book.

As the metal door opened down the way, both of them ducked their hands into their leather dusters and gripped guns. But it was just Zypher….with a triumvirate of ladies, all of whom were about as attractive as garbage next to a dinner plate. Beggars, choosers and all that, however. Besides, each had the foremost requirement: a neck.”

Xcor is still advantageously shrewd in seeking death of King Wrath, and he’s doing it with a vengeance. He’s cruel, cunning, deceitful but he has a softer side of good, hes honorable and self loathing thats slowly unraveling. That latter reminds me a bit of my first love in this series Zsadist at one time, so how I can I not have a small glimmer of hope that he can become good. With the help of his second in command former aristocrat Throe He would sell his soul for position over a dead Wrath. This makes me anxious because I don’t think I can take another mate losing theirs again. I’m in favor of Wrath, but the most favorable outcome for me would be them combining forces in the future and battling the lessors together. Then we have the chosen Layla that has given blood to these men to heal them while unknowingly getting caught up in desire.

You said you were here to help me, help her.” When there was no reply, Tohr’s voice lowere. “Lassiter, I’m on my knees here.”

Lassiter is such a hilarious, pop culture loving, devious, and false prophet of an angel, but he’s likable, and I want more!

“What was it about the cock and balls that made males think they had a lock on strength?”

I really look forward to getting to know the aristocrat Assail more, in upcoming books! He reminds me so much of my favorite former drug dealing Sympath, and we all know that’s the beautiful Fauhawk wearing, Cane toting, Fur coat wearing Rhevenge. Anyone reminding me of him is already on my radar. He’s got a respectable side to him, I think he’d prefer not to show it but I’m curious if he will get his own HEA as well.

Life was short, no matter how many days you were granted. And people were precious, each and every one, no matter how many you were lucky enough to have in your life. And love….love was worth dying for. Worth living for.

Overall this was such an emotionally riveting and exciting story. When I finished Lover Reborn, I was exhausted emotionally, but yet I’m eager to step right back into Caldwell, NY to be with my favorite warriors again. This book would have been a 5 star read for me but I’m petty. Lol. I can forgive Tohr being a bastard but I can’t shake the Qhuinn “thingy” in this book, I see that becoming a problem in later books….so I’m taking off 1/2 star for Ward torturing me, HA! ;) I LOVED this story! It actually felt like Ward got down to business and it reminded me of earlier Black Dagger Brotherhood books. Thankfully it seems like with each new installment of these books Ward introduces new characters, and that’s so very brilliant of her because I want many more books in the Black Dagger Brotherhood world.

P.s. To those that have read the book and remembers Tohr taking about other Hellons that cheat on their mates, was anyone confused by that?? Is that new world building or something? Oh my I hope not! That’s sounds hideous.

Please allow me to share my favorite quote of the entire book:

“Our future has come.”

      Hi Cimmaron,

Thank you!;) I’m so happy we LOVED this book!!!! Me too, I wanted to re-read it as well! If I didn’t have books to review, I would re-read it, but I’m going to re-read the entire series this year though in preparation for Qhuay’s book 2013! Squeeeeee!

  4. braine says:

  6. Ning says:

hey, you’re the blogger. You can rate it however you want. I was halfway through this review when I realized I should stop before the spoilers get too much. Lol it’s not your fault, but since I’m only on book 4 I don’t know any of the later characters, but I can’t wait to read this!

    • MissVain says:

      Hi Ning! :)

I ended up rating it 5 stars instead of 4 1/2 because I loved it too much to do that!!! :) Well if you were caught up my review wouldn’t necessarily be spoilers but if your only in book 4 then that was smart to stop.:) I hope you’re loving the BDB as much as I do!!! I’m obsessed with this series!:) Let me know how you’re loving the series as you go!! I love ALL the brothers but you’ve already met one of the men that share the #1 spot with 4 other men!;) Zsadist, Rhevenge, Qhuinn & Blay!! But I do love all of them soooo much! Lol

  7. Alexa says:

I believe they have mentioned in previous books that males could take more than one female as their wife and sometimes that happened. I think the blood in the Brotherhood just makes them too hot headed to have more than one wife, they love too hard and too fast to fall for more than one woman but I believe other vampire males have in the past.

Idk I’m still wrapped up in the half way point of the book and I see some of the missteps that you found and I also see some great things. I do agree with you that this book finally feels like it has gotten back to the older style the books were written in and I do find many of the new characters to be quite yummy.

I am worried as all hell about this Qhuinn thing that happens!!! I’m not sure I can take another heartbreak on that level!! (I’m really starting to dread this) I swear this book is full of so many unhappy moments that I wondering where all of the love and happiness went. It seems to me that almost everyone in this book is suffering and it is heartbreaking and a little depressing to read at times.

Oh dear I can’t wait to keep reading this one tonight so that I can start to find all of these pieces coming together.

Although I disagree about No’One she may seem self-sacrificing but I believe she does have strength. It is not Xhex’s style but I believe she has her own in her own special way, she just isn’t all up in your face about it. I do believe it takes a strong person to stand in the face of Tohr, knowing she wants him but also knowing they have a road block of Wellsie to conquer. I respect where she stands with Tohr even though I can’t wait for the two of them to get going with figuring out how to properly be together.

    • MissVain says:

Hi Alexa, I must have missed that, I don’t remember reading that, and I hope none of the brothers ever want another wife, I wouldn’t be able to handle that.

Glad you’re seeing your yumminess of the new clients as well, and I love it that Ward is back.

Don’t dread the Qhuinn & Blay part, I hated it but it may not bother you as much….but it really bothered me, but it’s because I’m so close to those characters! I’m curious to hear your take on it though…;)

      • Alexa says:

Lol I’m not done with this book yet, I have 30 pages to read once I’m home from work but I already read the part with Qhuinn. That just about broke my heart. I was almost screaming out. I had to stop the book at that point and I left it behind when I traveled to Chicago this weekend for the family wedding. I just knew I needed a little space in order to get over what he freakin did.

Sigh this is going to be a complication in the next book but I have faith that with as much as both Qhuinn and Blay have been through that they will be able to handle this as well.

  8. Bek says:

Awesome review! I agree with pretty much everything LOL…

I was surprised by how much of a bastard Tohr could be. Yeah, he’s upset and all over Wellsie, but at some moments I wanted No’one to just slap the fucker.

I really liked how we got to know Xcor and find out a bit more about the bastards. Deep down Xcor is a mess and am looking forward to his book. Although I DESPISE Layla, it will be a good twist if she becomes his shellan.

Lasiter was AMAZING. I hope his book is in the Brothers and not the Angel series – these books are just better.

    And now, to Qhuay *sigh*.
I am pretty relieved that I’m not the only one who is upset by the turn of events. (I googled – there are heaps of us haha)
I cried during the Qhuinn/Layla needing scene. I was so angry and upset I wanted to throw up. Although I’m glad she didn’t write in the actual business, the chandelier shaking, thumping and moaning was enough to turn my stomach anyway.
Honestly I’m angry at the Warden. She told us Qhuay fans to have faith – and I did. And boy did she let me down.
I don’t see how there can be a HEA when there is three (plus child) in a relationship. I’m pissed that Qhuinn went and knocked up Layla without a second thought about Blay – that’s NOT love.
I have been in love with Blay since we met him on the bus and don’t want him to have to share Qhuinn, because like it or not, Layla will be involved with him for the rest of his life if she has the child (and the Warden has confirmed its a positive).

I was really hoping the vision Qhuinn saw was not of the future, but instead a glimpse of what ‘might have been’ if he had mated with Layla instead of bonding with Blay. I have been looking forward to Qhuay for years but now, I am full of dread. I can see the Warden giving Qhuinn and Layla a baby and down the track having Xcor mate with Layla, the child keeping them all interwined together. She likes to do that with her stories (interwine couples from previous encounters/past together).

But I do think if she does, she will lose a LOT of fans.

    • MissVain says:

      Hi Bek!;)

      Thank you!!;)
Yeah I loved him but wow he was a bastard at times, I was also shocked lol.

I agree I’m intrigued by Xcor, Throe and Zypher! I think Ward is going to find a way to make us fall in love with those characters while bringing the BOB & BDB together as a team, I predict. I’m not big fan of Layla either especially because of what transpired in this book with you know who!!!

I already expected that to happen but it didn’t make it any easier to read, I was devastated!!!!!!! I have faith in Ward, I think she’s to bring her “A” game with Qhuays book!! I can hardly even wait!!!:) it’s going to be a mess though with Xcor and Layla and Qhuinn, I already can feel he drama! LOL. I say bring it, hehe.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!!;) <3

  9. Tyraa says:

I say BRING ON QUAY! And I loved Xcor in this book, I know he’s the bad guy but he’s had it rough and aw I know he’s not going to take the whole Layla and Quinn thing very well ;(

  10. MissVain says:

    Hi Tyraa :)

I’m obsessed with Qhuay!!!!<3 I totally agree with you. ;) I don't dislike Xcor, I just can't have him trying to kill Wrath, but I have a feeling Ward is going to unite the BDB and the BoB somehow!! Lol...Ward said at the Qhuay book announcement that Xcor and Throe are going to be trying to get Layla and they're not going to take the Qhuinn thing well at all, and Qhuinn is going to be very protective over her....I smell lots of drama, and I always say bring it!! However since I'm such huge Qhuay fans that I know the drama is going to break my heart, but I can't wait!!!;)

Thank you for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!!!<3

  11. Amber Hughes says:

Just letting you know that I will be reading your review AFTER I finish the book-LOL! I’m a little over 300 pages into it. I’ve tried to avoid all reviews until I’m finished because I don’t want to have any spoilers or see comments, etc. I will be back! hehe :-)

  12. TNels says:

I just recently got the book. I’m still early stages, trying to avoid reviews (read spoilers),but its hard:-).I’m doubling my efforts, I want to comment too:-). I got so excited hearing next book is likely Qhuay’s story, FINALLY!. Then I got depressed that I have to wait a whole year. Like some people, I’m a big Qhuay fan. I’ve got a feeling our hearts will break all kind of ways (right up there with Z’s past and Thor losing Wellsie). I hope Ms. Ward takes pity on us, I don’t hate Layla nor Sax, but Qhuinn and Blay belong together (how long have they reduced us, ok me, into tears). Still, I can’t wait

    • MissVain says:

      Hi TNels :)

I couldn’t agree with you more!! We need Qhuay’s story, and we need it to be spicy!!!! Lol…I love them, and I have faith that Ward will do them justice!!;) Lover Reborn is just amazing and I hope you love it…maybe I’m biased because I totally love the BDB but I loved every bit of it!! *sigh* let me know how it goes for you!!;)

  13. Espana says:

As far as No’One is concerned, she’s kind of like that girl your best guy friend just started dating: you either liked her going into it, or you were willing to tolerate her for the sake of Tohrment. Again, I felt like she could have been fleshed out a little better, but there’s something compelling about her, so that you can’t help but hope she comes into herself in some way significant. Is she the greatest shellan ever written? No. But do you hope she and Tohrment can make it work? Absolutely. Just like you’d hope for the happiness of anyone you found yourself invested in, as we have been with Tohrment for the last ten years.

  14. TNels says:

“That’s right buddy, our future has come” oh be still my poor heart, a year is a long ass time to b going crazy now.
Shew, I got angry, I laughed, I got sad, I cried (Wellsie’s mating dress, when Thor was packing away the house and the fade ceremony), I bawled my eyes out.
I loved this book, I was so unsure of Noone, but miss Ward redeemed her in my eyes. No typical woman here, she had her own issues to deal with (made me want to slap Thor hard @ times too). It makes sense the time it took Thor to realize his feelings for Autumn or that there was no bonding scent, Wellsie was his all and that is not something that can be replaced! But I’m glad he can love again albeit differently.
@ first was not sure of the John&Xhex’s storyline, but I got to understand the why of it. Xhex is no ‘Glymera Lady of Grace and Lace’ chick, she a professional killer, as deadly as the brothers. And as much as I love John, he needed to remember that true. What a reminder that love on its own is not enough.
As for funny, awesome Lassiter, I hope he gets his own book or he makes more and more appearances in these stories.
Xcor, I ain’t sure how he can be redeemed right now, never mind his guilt over Throe and what he did to himself for it or how he feels for Layla, he tried to KILL the king!!!Goodluck with that one miss Ward (and with Qhuinn’s wrath).
Ok I stop now:-).Except to say, I loved this book so much and Qhuinn and Blay, I’m ready for you (been too long)
