Review: Bloodlines

♥ Vampire Academy the New Generation ♥

Title: Bloodlines
Author: Richelle Mead
Series: Bloodlines #1
Publisher: Penguin
Release Date: August 23, 20111

The first book in Richelle Mead’s brand-new teen fiction series – set in the same world as Vampire Academy.

When alchemist Sydney is ordered into hiding to protect the life of Moroi princess Jill Dragomir, the last place she expects to be sent is a human private school in Palm Springs, California. But at their new school, the drama is only just beginning.

Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, Bloodlines explores all the friendship, romance, battles and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive – this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone’s out for blood.

The last interview was a trendy bar downtown. I’d taken it on faith that Adrian knew probably every drink in the world and had made up a fake credential for the resume, claiming he’d taken a bartending class. I stayed in the car for this one and sent him alone figuring he had the best chance here. At the very least his outfit alone Would be appropriate. When he came out in ten minutes I was aghast.

“How?” I demanded. “How could you have screwed this one up?”

“When I got in, they said the manager was on the phone and would be a few minutes. So I sat down and ordered a drink.” This time I did lean my head against the steering wheel.

“What did you order?”

“A martini.”

“A martini.” I lifted my head. “You ordered a martini before a job interview.”

“It’s a bar, Sage. I figured they’d be cool with it.”

Richelle Mead has created a fabulous new series once again!!!

I was a bit skeptical at first wondering; Could I love a new series in the Vampire Academy world without Rose Hathaway? Well Sydney may not be Bad-Ass like Rose Hathaway, but I’ve now discovered that if you’re not Bad-Ass then it’s always helpful to be friends with Ruthless people who are;) I’ll admit I figured Sydney was going to be a goody two shoes protagonist without much star quality but by the end of the book I realized Her Skeletons In The Closet she can be just as Kick-Ass as a vampire and being human was not going to limit her ability. Sydney was funny, talented, charming, smart, insecure and lovable after all. Bloodlines has succeeded my expectations, I absolutely LOVED this book!!!!!

“You shouldn’t have crossed me. Not now, not back then.” I stared unable to believe the audacity. It was the first time he’d directly referenced what wnt down years ago.

“Well that’s the thing,” I shouted at his retreating figure. “I didn’t cross you back then. You got off easy. It’s not going to happen again. You think I’m worried about you? I’m the one you need to be scared of.”

Keith came to a halt then slowly turned around, his face awash with disbelief. “Watch it.” he said at last. “I can make your life miserable.”

I gave him an icy smile. “You already have, and that’s why I’ve got the advantage. You’ve done your worst, but you haven’t seen what I can do yet.”

For those of you that know me, you’re familar with the fact that by the end of the first Vampire Academy book I already envisioned myself married off to Dimitri Belikov living a magical life with 3.5 kids, so obviously I was Team Dimitri, but that didn’t mean that I wasn’t up for a little side action with the dreamy Adrian Ivashkov. At the end of Bloodlines I was even more thankful that (Last Sacrifice spoiler here—->(view spoiler) The Illustriously fascinating Sexpot, Gorgeous, Lustworthy, Charming, Protective, With ALL his Vices Adrian, and all his desirably handsome attributes in Bloodlines. ;)

Oh how I missed Adrian but Mrs. Mead made up for our brief separation with plenty of Adrian for all his lovers and she makes me wish I could have an Adrian ofmy own. While ramaining witty and charming throughout the entire book Adrian showed us a vulnerable side that I found Sexy Heroic. He’s endured a major family crisis, fell in love, endured the heartache of unrequited love, hit rock bottom and became a survivor That I personably found to be his most favorable attribute!!

Who doesn’t love a man that has had his world challenged around him, wether it be his own self destructive behavior or others behavior around him and has somehow came out a more honorable, respectable, reliable character because of it?!!…. I DO!!!!! ;) Most importantly he’s still HILARIOUS.

“Is it a money thing?” asked Adrian. “Because I’ve got enough. Just tell me how much it costs.”

There was a long pause, and I hoped Adrian wouldn’t be asked to show any cash since the last of his money had gone to promoting cancer.

“I don’t know,” the guy said at last. “If I was able to do this copper tattoo you’re talking about, and I’m not saying I can, you probably couldn’t afford it.”

“I’m telling you,” said Adrian. “Just name your price…..I want it to look badass. You probably can’t even do the design I want.”

“That’s the least of your worries” said the guy. “I’ve been doing this for years. I can draw anything you want.”

“Yeah? Can you draw a skeleton riding a motorcycle with flames coming our of it? And I want a pirate hat on the skeleton. And a parrot on his shoulder. A skeleton parrot. Or maybe a ninja skeleton parrot? No, that would be overkill. But it’d be cool if the biker skeleton could be shooting some ninja throwing stars. That are on fire.” said Adrian

“That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard,” said the tattooist.

“That’s not what the ladies are going to say,” said Adrian. “I’ll give you my info. My names Jet Steele.”

For all us Abe Mazeur fans out there we get a small taste of him in Bloodlines, but I’m hoping he becomes a much more predominate character in this series. Oh and we also discover what deliciously gossip worthy information that caused Sydney to be his Puppet On A String willing participate in Rose’s magnificently planned jailbreak in Last Sacrifice. The news was overly juicy and well worth the sacrifices Sydney is forced to endure to keep in Zimmey’s excellent graces. If by then I wasn’t sure Sydney could hold her own in a volatile situation I was a believer now. Who says you have to be on the side of good without being on the fringe of bad!?!

I found fifteen year old Jill to be kind, naive and likable, unfortunately she’s insecure, but that’s believable behavior for young teens these days. She’s fearless and I admired that quality in her, in many ways she reminds me of her sister Queen Lisa Dragomir. She’s constantly teased at the human boarding school for being…wait for it,….wait…..Too skinny with a model figure and pale skin”…These ridiculously viscious attitudes from fellow students reminded me why it’s good to be out of high school. LOL. Luckily her older “sister” has become protective over Jill and won’t sit by and watch her being ridiculed alone.

when I reached my room I gasped when I saw the door.Someone had taken red paint and drawn bats and fanged faces all over it. Scrawled across the front, in big blocky letters were the words

Tears of frustration glinted in Jill’s eyes. Is it possible she really thinks Jill is a vampire?

“Maybe I should do something about Laurel. There are other ways to get back at her besides freezing water.”

“No” I said quickly, “Don’t lower yourself to that. Revenge is petty, and you’re better than that.”

Jill gave me a sad smile. “You keep saying that. But don’t you think something should be done about Laurel?”

Oh yes I Definitly did. This had gone too far, and I’d been wrong to let it slide. Jill was right that there were other ways to get back at someone. And I was right that revenge was petty and nothing that Jill should sully herself with. That’s why I was going to do it.

We do get another yet undesirable character named Keith though I like to refer to him as Stink Eye the guy with the one glass eye. He’s Nasty and hateful to Sydney while treating her with so much disdain and dispair I wanted to reach through the book and slap him and at times I’ll shamefully admit I wanted to remove his favorable eye. Luckily though my efforts were not needed because he has consequences handed down to him that only he was worthy of.:)))

“My God, Sage. Your eyes. How have I never noticed them?” that uncomfortable feeling was spreading over me again. “What about them?”

“The color,” he breathed. “When you stand in the light. They’re amazing… molten gold. I could paint those….” He reached toward me but then pulled back. “They’re beautiful. You’re so beautiful.”

Something in the way he was looking at me froze me up and made my stomach do flip-flops, though I couldn’t quite articulate why. I only knew that he looked as though he was seeing me for the first time……..and it scared me. I’d been able to brush off his easy joking compliments, but this intensity was something different altogether, something I didn’t know how to react to. When ge looked at me like this. I believed that he thought my eyes were beautiful—-that I was beautiful. It was more than I was ready for. Flustered, I took a step backward, out of the sunlight, needing to get away from the energy of his gaze. I’d heard spirit could send him off on weird tangents but had no clue if thats what this was. I was saved from my feeble attempts to muster a witty comment when a knock at the door made both of us jump.

“Showtime huh?”

Adrian’s new research partner stepped through the door, and I knew the uneasy peace we’d just established in Palm Springs was about to shatter….

Dimitri Belikov had arrived

Richelle Mead how can you end on those last words??!! I never thought I would ever say this but, Its Adrian’s turn to be happy now. I can’t wait to read Golden Lily . I’m so excited for the next installment in this series. Another excellent 5 star worthy performance by Richelle Mead, however I do have one teensy tiny issue…I don’t like that Jill is fifteen and has college men drooling over her. I don’t mind an age difference as a matter of fact I welcome it but, seriously what could a fifteen year old girl have in common with a man in college??? Nothing!!

“Whoa.” said Adrian, “If you get to come along as a chaperone, so do I.”

“If we both do, then Eddie will want to as well,” I pointed out. “Doesn’t sound like much of a date.”

“So?” Adrian’s brief moment of seriousness and concern had vanished in the face of what he saw as social fun. “Think of it as less of a date than faux-family outing. One that will entertain me while protecting her virtue.”

“Adrian were focusing on Jill here. This isn’t about your personal entertainment.”

“Not true,” he said green eyes sparkling. “Everythings about my personal entertainment. The world is my stage. Keep it up, you’re becoming a star performer in the show.”

I want The Golden Lily Now….. Please!
